Case hardening steels
As a rule, the case-hardening steels are used for the construction of mechanical parts for which high surface hardness and good core strength are required. They are structural steels intended for surface hardening obtained by case hardening and hardening. Case hardening is a heat treatment during which carbon is introduced into the steel through a diffusion process to obtain a hardened surface layer.

The quenched and tempered steels are used for the construction of mechanical parts subjected to high static and dynamic loads and they are widely used in the mechanical industry: shafts of all types, rods, connecting rods, levers, etc. This group includes structural steels intended for heat treatment, i.e. massive hardening followed by appropriate tempering. In the hardened condition only, the steel shows high hardness with very low strength; therefore, the subsequent tempering is necessary to eliminate all stresses and brittleness. The quenching and tempering achieves the optimum compromise between strength and notch toughness.
