September 2015 | Symphony in steel

, cordially welcomes you with current news from the wire and cable branch!

Some life partners of ambitious researchers might possibly now revolt, but romance and science are not always categorically opponents. Take, for example, the topic of iron and high temperatures. The stability of this material is of crucial importance for steel production.

The mystery, which is behind this stability, has now been solved to some degree - and this inspires scientists to rave about symphonies, harmonies, violins and wind instruments. Read all about it in September’s theme: Symphony in steel.

What makes iron stable in high temperatures? Material scientists have long occupied themselves with this question, which is of huge importance both for steel manufacturing and for steel processing.

Now, with completely new theoretical approaches and complex experimental studies, researchers from the Computer-supported Material Design department at the Max Planck Institute of Iron Research (MPIE) in Düsseldorf, in collaboration with colleagues from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), have managed to get to the bottom of this question.

The Magic Flute by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

The Magic Flute by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is certainly one of the most well-known operas in the world. However, those who experience the performance of Barrie Kosky and the theatre group “1927“, which had its premiere at the Komische Oper Berlin in 2012 and in the meantime was also hailed in Los Angeles, will be astonished: The presentation plays in a virtuoso manner with your own associations and viewing habits. The singer/performers interact with an imaginative animated film that follows Mozart’s magical music, and which makes the fairytale world, in which Tamino, Pamina and Papageno feel at home, come alive.
