July 2015 | Algorithms in moulding technology

,

www.wire-tradefair.com cordially welcomes you with current news from the wire and cable branch!

Evolution is one of these things: What will continue to develop and what will not? Which characteristics will stand the test, which will not? Nature works a lot with trial and error here. Evolution also plays a role in forging technology – it is a long way from a raw steel element to a finished form. And in the end, which forms turn out to be the best can very often only be found out through testing.

Engineers are assisted by computer programmes – to be exact by the so-called evolutionary algorithms. You can read about how you can calculate the optimal component preforms with computer simulations in our theme of the month: Algorithms in moulding technology.

In future, forging companies could design stage sequences significantly more quickly than before. Researchers of the Institut für Integrierte Produktion Hannover (IPH – Institute for Integrated Production Hanover) are working together with the industry on software that automatically determines the optimal preform.

Evolutionary algorithms thus support the designers in an extremely time-consuming task that, at present, is often carried out according to the principle of trial and error.
