October 2015 | Producing efficiently with light

, cordially welcomes you with current news from the tube branch!

Autumn is here, the days are getting shorter. The dark hours naturally also have their charm, if you are cosy at home. However, at work, most things are better with bright light. Even better is bundled light. We could not imagine production technology without the laser; it has become a universal tool.

The potential of the laser is still far from being exhausted. Fraunhofer researchers are working on lasers of the next generation and are getting them ready for their use in production. Read about it in October’s theme of the month: Producing efficiently with light.

Lasers play a key role in the manufacturing of the future. Whether tailored 3D print of lightweight construction components or precise bores using an ultra-short pulse laser, the range of applications stretches across all sectors of manufacturing. Bundled light is a core element of Industry 4.0, in which the virtual, digital world is connected to real manufacturing.

The laser cuts, hardens, welds, polishes, measures, produces microstructures, traces errors and removes material. In the process, lasers impress with their high precision and speed. The fact that lasers are so widely used in production technology today is thanks in part to Fraunhofer.
