What could really happen to someone 10,000 metres below sea level? Besides acute lack of oxygen, total darkness and a pressure that will do the lungs in. All of this, however, does not matter to an undersea cable one little bit – it is appropriately equipped to withstand all adversities.

However, engineers still needed to learn something in 1986, when a line fell silent between Tenerife and Gran Canaria. When the ship pulled the cable up from a depth of only 1000 metres, 50 shark teeth were stuck in the polymer protective covering. In May, our theme of the month thus deals with the guarantee of high quality sheathing: Process stability and reliability for subsea cables.
