At the thyssenkrupp Steel site in Duisburg, the renovation and modernization of central production units is entering the home stretch. In addition to the renovation of the Bruckhausen continuous casting plant, this includes, above all, the separation of the casting and rolling plant. Within the production network, the unit plays a key role in supplying further processing.
In order to meet future customer requirements, the qualitative capabilities of the casting and rolling plant, which was put into operation more than 25 years ago, are no longer sufficient in the long term. The step is now being taken to convert the unit into a continuous casting plant and a modern hot strip mill connected behind it. thyssenkrupp Steel had emphasized that, despite the planned structural reorganization of the steel business, the measures of the previous strategic program remain strategically necessary and will be implemented. The total investment sum for all projects is in the high three-digit million range.
Shutdown of the casting and rolling mill
The preparatory excavation and foundation work for the major project has largely been completed, and pre-assembly of various plant components has already begun. In mid-November 2024, the existing casting and rolling mill in Bruckhausen will then be shut down and partially dismantled to make room for the new plant components. The new continuous casting plant and the modernized hot strip mill will then go into operation and ramp up from mid-May 2025.
thyssenkrupp Steel is continuing to consistently align its product portfolio with future markets and profitable premium products by optimizing the production network. These include multi-phase steels and lightweight steels as well as grades with high surface quality. In addition, the production of high-quality electrical steel grades, which are indispensable for the energy and mobility transition, is being strengthened.
