Washington State Ferries (WSF), the largest ferry operator in the United States, has embarked on an ambitious plan to electrify its fleet by choosing ABB as the sole propulsion vendor for five new hybrid-electric ferries. This strategic collaboration is set to redefine maritime transportation with advanced sustainable technologies.
Advanced Propulsion Technology
Under the terms of the new partnership, ABB will provide cutting-edge hybrid electric propulsion systems, featuring their innovative Onboard DC Grid™ power distribution, energy storage, and advanced energy management technologies. The contract also encompasses integrated marine automation to ensure peak operational efficiency and environmental performance for the forthcoming vessels.
The initiative is part of WSF’s comprehensive $3.98 billion Ferry System Electrification plan aimed at transitioning to a zero-emission fleet by 2050. The project begins with these five new 1,500-passenger and 160-vehicle ferries, laying the groundwork for the future electrification of their entire service operation.
Drew Orvieto, Vice president of sales for Marine Systems, US at ABB Marine & Ports, expressed pride in the partnership, highlighting the alignment of both entities' commitments to sustainability. “Our team is excited to bring our expertise in hybrid-electric systems to this pivotal project, supporting WSF’s mission toward a cleaner, more efficient transportation model,” Orvieto stated.
Fleet Modernization and Community Impact
WSF operates 21 auto-passenger ferries across 10 routes, connecting communities across numerous terminals. The transition to hybrid electric ferries represents a critical step in modernizing their fleet, significantly reducing fuel consumption and emissions.
Matt von Ruden, WSF system electrification program administrator, commented on the significance of the collaboration: “This contract is more than just a technological upgrade—it's about enhancing service reliability and setting a new standard in ferry services with reduced environmental impact. ABB’s deep expertise is essential in achieving the performance and reliability we need for this transformation.”
As WSF moves forward with its electrification agenda, ABB’s role will extend from the initial shipyard bidding stage through the vessel commissioning and into initial service, ensuring a seamless integration of the new technologies.
This initiative not only supports Washington State’s environmental objectives but also sets a precedent for the maritime industry worldwide, showcasing the practical applications of hybrid-electric technology in large-scale transportation networks.
