TRUMPF has developed a groundbreaking method for fully automatic sorting of parts without the need for programming, with the new SortMaster Station and SortMaster Vision solutions. This innovative process uses artificial intelligence in collaboration with Intrinsic, a leading company in AI and robotics software. The solution is flexible and particularly suitable for thick sheets and complex geometries.
The SortMaster Station separates 2D laser-cut parts from the sheet, regardless of their geometry. These parts can then either be removed manually or fully automatically using the SortMaster Vision, while the laser cutting machine is already processing the next sheet.
"Automated sorting of parts is one of the biggest challenges in sheet metal processing. Many conventional methods are too inflexible and time-consuming to program, which is why companies often rely on manual processes. With our new solutions, we enable the automated sorting of any sheet metal parts and further strengthen our technological leadership," explains Thomas Schneider, CTO of TRUMPF Werkzeugmaschinen.
Research to improve tool surfaces
TRUMPF's solution not only provides efficient removal but also maximizes the utilization of the laser machine by decoupling the cutting, separating, and sorting processes. Thanks to the collaboration with Intrinsic, parts can be automatically recognized and removed using AI-driven image recognition and robotic functions, greatly simplifying the entire process. The robot plans its movements independently without the need for programming. This flexibility allows even complex and thick parts, which could not be automatically removed with conventional solutions, to be safely and efficiently processed.
The new sorting modules can also be retrofitted, allowing customers to minimize their initial investment and gradually increase the level of automation. "This fully automated solution for separating and sorting is a real game-changer," emphasizes Schneider.
