Dutch steel producer Tata Steel IJmuiden and Irish company Ecocem Materials Ltd. have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to expand their cooperation on the development and potential use of next-generation steel slags for low-carbon cement, mortar and concrete applications across Europe. The agreement builds on an existing joint research programme and confirms both companies' intention to explore new technical, commercial and regulatory pathways for the valorisation of steel slags generated at the IJmuiden site in the Netherlands.
A business relationship already exists between Tata Steel IJmuiden and Ecocem for the use of granulated blast furnace slag in cement and concrete. The new cooperation focuses on slag from basic oxygen steelmaking as an alternative cement material as well as on the further development of slag from electric arc furnaces as a supplementary cementitious material.
Clinker Substitution to Reduce Emissions
By replacing clinker – the most carbon-intensive component of cement – with alternative materials such as slag, the cement industry can significantly reduce its CO₂ emissions. At the same time, industrial by-products are directed towards higher-value, circular use.
The aim of the project on basic oxygen and electric arc furnace slags is to transform these steelmaking by-products into cement binders or constituents that both support the decarbonisation of cement and concrete production and promote circular economy principles. The cooperation also aims to increase the availability of low-carbon concrete solutions on the market and to offer designers, concrete producers and construction companies a broader range of sustainable material options.
