As part of a pilot project, Stadtwerke Flensburg is planning to be able to operate its combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) plants with green hydrogen (H2) from 2028. Gasunie Deutschland, as the long-distance network operator, will assume responsibility for the necessary infrastructure together with Siemens Energy as the turbine supplier and H2 Energy Europe AG as the H2 producer.
The infrastructural framework for the use of H2 in Flensburg is to be created by Gasunie converting a gas pipeline to Ellund to run on 100% hydrogen and becoming part of a Europe-wide hydrogen network that Gasunie is helping to build. The connection to the future Danish hydrogen network will then be realised in Ellund.
The planning and realisation of the connection to Denmark has already been taking place for four years in cooperation between Gasunie and the Danish network operator Energinet. "An efficient infrastructure is essential for the ramp-up of the hydrogen economy in Germany", explains Britta van Boven, Managing Director of Gasunie Deutschland. "With Hyperlink, we are building the hydrogen highway in northern Germany that connects Germany with the Netherlands and Denmark. Green hydrogen from Denmark will reach Schleswig-Holstein for the first time as early as the end of 2028. This will give northern Germany a central role on the road to a CO2-neutral energy supply. We look forward to contributing to the successful realisation of this exciting project with our infrastructure."
