Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH and the automotive supplier GEDIA Automotive Group have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). In order to make production more sustainable in the future, GEDIA will use CO2-reduced steel from the SALCOS® route to manufacture its products.
With the transformation program SALCOS® - Salzgitter Low CO2 Steelmaking, the Salzgitter Group is gradually converting its steel production to hydrogen-based processes. The goal is almost CO2-free production from 2033, for which the classic blast furnace route will be replaced by production processes using direct reduction and electric arc furnaces. Salzgitter Flachstahl can already supply its customers with CO2-reduced steel via the so-called Peiner Route. The raw steel is produced there from scrap in the electric arc furnace and cast into slabs.
“We are pleased to have a competent partner at our side in Salzgitter AG who cares about sustainability and responsibility just as much as the GEDIA Automotive Group. By working together and signing the MOU, we are able to take further steps towards CO2 neutrality and continuously reduce our ecological footprint,” explains Klaus Bierwirth, Chief Commercial Officer / Member of the Executive Board GEDIA.
GEDIA is a long-standing partner of Salzgitter Flachstahl (SZFG). SZFG supplies the company with 9 locations worldwide primarily with cold sheet metal and hot-dip galvanized steel for lightweight automotive body construction and chassis components.
“Our long-standing collaboration with GEDIA has been further consolidated with this MoU. “Green” steel from our SALCOS® program will soon be used at GEDIA to produce the body parts of the future – sustainably and, above all, environmentally friendly,” says Phillip Meiser, Sales Director Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH.
