A new, large-format tape storage unit has gone into operation in the Laser Competence Center at Schoeller in Hellenthal. With the aim of increasing production efficiency and optimizing manufacturing processes, Schoeller Werk GmbH & Co. KG initiated significant site development in March 2023.
Refinement of the laser welding process is one of the main focuses. In order to prepare for this key technology of the future, the producer of welded and drawn stainless steel pipes is currently renewing its machinery in various plants. A crucial step forward in this project is the introduction of additional tape storage in the laser competence center in Hellenthal.
Increasing manufacturing efficiency
These strip storage units make a significant contribution to increasing production efficiency: They allow strip coils to be temporarily stored so that personnel can replace the coils without having to interrupt the welding lines. The result is less material waste and longer machine running times.
Schoeller tape storage has so far only been used on medium-sized laser welding systems. In order to increase the efficiency of large-scale systems, the company was faced with the task of finding a supplier for correspondingly large storage tanks - a search that ended successfully with an Italian manufacturer.
These tape storage units have recently been delivered to large-scale systems, successively assembled and successfully put into operation. These innovations are building blocks of a far-reaching strategy to increase efficiency in production. By significantly reducing production waste and improving system availability, Schoeller emphasizes its commitment to setting standards not only in terms of quality, but also in production efficiency.
