thyssenkrupp Materials de México opened a new service center in San Luis Potosí that focuses on sustainability and electromobility in the automotive industry. The €34 million investment creates approximately 65 new jobs and marks a total investment of €100 million in North America over 15 months.
thyssenkrupp Materials Services in North America is pursuing a growth strategy and the new location is part of it. In addition to the newly opened location in San Luis Potosí, there are three additional service centers in the cities of Saltillo, Puebla and Silao. The latter has a steel and aluminum cutting facility and will work with the new location as it is only 170 kilometers away. This makes them the only two companies in the country that offer this service. The site will begin operations on February 15, 2024.
“Industry needs and requirements are changing rapidly. As part of the major transformation topics of electromobility, sustainability and supply chain resilience, Mexico is a clear growth market for us. Here we can support customers in precisely these key areas with our 'Materials as a Service' strategy," explains Martin Stillger, CEO of thyssenkrupp Materials Services.
Specialized services for lightweight construction
thyssenkrupp Materials de México has strategically built the four service centers in the immediate vicinity of numerous automobile manufacturers (OEM) and various industrial suppliers. The short delivery routes and the direct connection to the railway line at the site in San Luis Potosí enable a more profitable and sustainable way of working as well as “just in time” deliveries. The new location and the service center in Silao will be operated together due to their proximity.
The Schuler cutting line, which enables the cutting of aluminum and high-strength steel blanks for the automotive industry, is one of the advantages of the new service center. Aluminum contributes to the reduction of pollutant emissions due to its light weight and low density and plays a crucial role in the development of the automotive sector.
The automotive industry has responded in recent years to increasing demand triggered by the rapid transition to electric mobility and the introduction of stricter emissions standards by the US government. This country is the largest sales market for Mexican suppliers (approx. 80% of sales). The commissioning of the new plant in San Luis Potosí will help meet this demand.
“The opening of the plant will allow us to further expand our unique position in this processing service in the Mexican market. We appreciate the good cooperation with the Secretariat for Economic Development of San Luis Potosí on this important project,” says Olaf Voss, CEO of thyssenkrupp Materials de México.
