GASCADE Gastransport GmbH (GASCADE) and rostock EnergyPort cooperation GmbH (REPCO) want to join forces to accelerate the ramp-up of the hydrogen industry in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
Both companies issued a letter of intent in mid-March to promote the development of the Baltic coastal region for green energies: REPCO's hydrogen production project HyTechHafen Rostock and the Rostock region as well as the industrial port of Lubmin are to be connected to the greater Berlin/Brandenburg area and the industrial centre of Halle/Leipzig/Leuna via the Rostock-Wrangelsburg and Flow - making hydrogen happen H2 pipelines from GASCADE.
"In the medium term in particular, the combination of the expansion prospects in the Rostock hydrogen region with production at the Lubmin site, together with the transport of hydrogen to consumption centres in the Berlin/Brandenburg or Halle/Leipzig/Leuna areas, will make an important contribution to opening up eastern German conurbations for hydrogen", explains Ludger Hümbs, Head of Corporate Development at GASCADE.
Exploiting local infrastructure potential for a climate-neutral H2 economy
As part of the cooperation for the rapid ramp-up of the H2 industry, GASCADE and REPCO are endeavouring to connect the HyTechHafen Rostock project via the approximately 120 km long Rostock-Wrangelsburg hydrogen pipeline.
The connection should become a reality by 2028 and become the starting point for the distribution of green H2. The regions around Rostock and Lubmin offer excellent conditions for the production and import of climate-neutral hydrogen.
A Rostock-Wrangelsburg connection and the Flow - making hydrogen happen hydrogen transport system will enable regional potential in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and for the whole of Germany and Europe to be tapped at the same time.
"We are convinced that this integrative approach is the right way to address the challenges associated with the energy transition and, in particular, to cover the energy demand from renewable energies", says Dr Ralf Tschullik, Managing Director of REPCO. "We consider the cooperation on the projects in the Baltic Sea coast region to be very important because it will enable us to fulfil key requirements for the establishment of a hydrogen hub in north-east Germany."
