Marcegaglia is launching an evolved version of Marcegaglia PRODEC®, its product range of stainless steel bars for machining purposes. The update is designed to meet rising demands for efficiency, reliability and competitiveness. The upgrade is the result of a structured multi-year industrial development path involving targeted improvements in manufacturing processes, material quality and machining performance.
Independent Comparative Tests Confirm Performance Step
In a market environment where performance must be measurable and translatable into operational value, Marcegaglia PRODEC® demonstrates, according to the manufacturer, a step forward validated by independent comparative testing. Recent V15 machining trials – which determine a material's workability by identifying the supplier achieving the highest cutting speed at 15 minutes of tool life – show significant improvements over leading European competitors:
- +13% cutting speed on 304L
- +20% cutting speed on 316L
- +159% longer tool life compared to the lowest European test result
In tests on peeled stainless steel bars in 304L / 1.4307, Marcegaglia PRODEC® reached a V15 cutting speed of 301 m/min, compared to 258 m/min for the lowest European competitor, 267 m/min as the European average and 275 m/min for the closest European competitor. On 316L / 1.4401, the value was 283 m/min versus 223 m/min, 237 m/min and 264 m/min in the same comparison groups. The tests were carried out in November 2025 with Marcegaglia PRODEC® and six other competing stainless steel bars; only European material, regarded as a global benchmark of excellence, was included. The tool used was a CNMG cemented carbide insert.
Practical Machining Examples
Two practical examples document the performance differences compared to standard material. In the first example – machining of a ring to a flange in 316L/4404 – turning time was reduced from 4:53 min to 3:18 min (–32%), milling time from 13:39 min to 9:24 min (–31%) and drilling time from 3:12 min to 2:36 min (–19%). Total processing time decreased from 21:44 min to 15:18 min, a saving of 6:26 min or 30%.
In the second example – ring-to-flange machining on a CNC turning machine – cutting speed increased from 110 m/min to 160 m/min (+46%), feed from 0.25 mm/rev to 0.3 mm/rev (+20%) and depth of cut from 1.5 mm to 2 mm (+33%). Processing time dropped from 21.1 min to 15.7 min (–26%), while tool life rose from 3–6 pieces to 9 pieces, an increase of 150–300%.
Application Areas and User Benefits
According to the manufacturer, these results translate into tangible benefits for end users: higher productivity, reduced machining costs and improved process stability. The product is therefore suited to a wide range of applications: fasteners, flanges, valves, pressure fittings, machined components for process equipment, nuts, bolts, screws, gears and shafts.
Presentation at Tube & wire 2026
With this development, Marcegaglia PRODEC® is positioned as an evolution standard in stainless steel machining, delivering measurable competitive advantage – higher output, greater efficiency and lower total cost. The product evolution was presented at Tube & wire 2026 (Düsseldorf, 13–17 April 2026).
