Energy company Uniper is advancing its plans for large-scale hydrogen production in Wilhelmshaven. US company Electric Hydrogen has been secured as technology partner for the 200-megawatt electrolysis plant. Initial planning phases have begun with a Pre-FEED study.
Electric Hydrogen, founded in 2020 and specializing in industrial electrolysis plants, becomes exclusive partner for the "Green Wilhelmshaven" project. The company's integrated plant concept promises particularly economical hydrogen production. The PEM technology will be powered by renewable electricity from wind farms and aims to supply industrial customers from chemical, steel, shipping, and aviation sectors.
Strategic Dual Concept Combines Production and Import
The project unites local hydrogen production with import capabilities. While the electrolysis plant will be built on the site of the former Uniper coal power plant, an ammonia terminal is planned near the existing LNG terminal. LNG Terminal Wilhelmshaven GmbH, a Uniper subsidiary, will connect both facilities via pipelines to the planned hydrogen core network and North German storage facilities.
The project, designated as a "Project of Common Interest" by the EU Commission, is expected to cover a significant portion of German hydrogen demand. With "Green Wilhelmshaven," Uniper aims to develop the site into a central hub for green hydrogen. The project is a cornerstone of the company's strategy to fully decarbonize energy supply by 2040.
