The industry giant Fives and the hydrogen producer Lhyfe plan to offer hydrogen-compatible industrial burners and directly supply the necessary hydrogen. To this end, they have signed a memorandum of understanding. In this partnership, Lhyfe will produce and supply green hydrogen, while Fives will provide solutions for its use in industrial combustion processes.
Hydrogen burners are on the rise: In recent years, the low-CO2 combustion of hydrogen instead of natural gas has established itself as the preferred method for decarbonizing energy-intensive industrial processes. For example, an aluminum furnace that produces 120 tons of aluminum per day with natural gas could reduce its CO2 emissions by more than 4,000 tons per year by using hydrogen. In Germany, companies like Kueppers Solutions are developing similar devices, which are already being tested in initial pilot projects.
Lhyfe and Fives now intend to jointly address this market with a new burner cooperation, as the French hydrogen company announced on Thursday, July 4th. They are specifically targeting the metal, glass, and cement industries, as well as selected industrial heating processes and applications in Europe and North America.
Hydrogen Burners as a "Key Technology" for the Industrial Sector
Lhyfe founder and CEO Matthieu Guesné emphasized that the industrial sector, and particularly industrial combustion, is currently in a "decisive phase": "After several years of development, hydrogen solutions are now mature and widely available on the market." The agreement with the new partner will offer "turnkey solutions" that will enable industrial operations to switch to hydrogen even faster.
The France-based industrial group Fives has been developing industrial burners for over 100 years, according to its own statements. Additionally, it has been a "technological pioneer in the field of hydrogen" for over 50 years. Under the brands ITAS, North American, and Pillard®, the group already offers the largest hydrogen burner portfolio on the market to serve all industries.
