The ground-breaking ceremony took place in the presence of the District Administrator (Havelland) Roger Lewandowski and the Mayor of the municipality of Ketzin Katrin Mußhoff.
„As part of the municipal heat transition, e.distherm will act as a partner to local authorities by developing and expanding green local and district heating supply networks to ensure the sustainable, efficient and affordable supply of heat to residential and commercial properties“, said Thomas Borchers, Managing Director of e.distherm, during the opening ceremony.
The heating network will be fed from the green waste heat generated by four biogas cogeneration plants operated by e.distherm and BMV Energie at the site. Part of the supply solution is a newly constructed heat storage tank with a storage volume of over 100 m3. The new site heating network will transport the heat to the Ontras regional site and to the NBB and Ontras gas pressure regulating and metering systems (GDRA), where it will be used for gas preheating.
Supplying the Ketzin site with climate-neutral heat
According to Gunar Schmidt, Ontras Managing Director of Operations and Safety, it is possible to reduce CO2 emissions by over 200,000 kg per year with the new system. Thanks to the nature of the heating network, the majority of the required heat energy is to be provided in a climate-neutral manner. Conventional boilers are only switched on on particularly cold days - when more energy is needed to preheat the gas.
A photovoltaic system (270 kilowatts) is to be added to the system in the coming year. The possibility of extending the local heating network towards the municipality of Ketzin is also being examined in order to supply the residential and commercial properties with climate-neutral energy.
„As one of the largest local distribution network operators in Germany, we see it as our duty to bring green energy to communities and households and to support innovative solutions,’ emphasises Claudia Rathfux, Commercial Managing Director of NBB Netzgesellschaft Berlin-Brandenburg. ‘With this goal in mind, NBB is involved in numerous sustainable future projects in Berlin and Brandenburg - such as this one on waste heat. But hydrogen and biogas also play a key role in the future of energy supply. In Ketzin, three large companies are demonstrating what is feasible in the energy transition.“
