On 24 May, Deutsche Glasfaser announced the expansion of the fibre optic network in the district of Karlsruhe. Within the next 100,000 additional households are to be connected to the network over the next three years, to advance digitalisation.
Coordination with the municipalities and Breitbandkabel Landkreis Karlsruhe GmbH (BLK) took into account the current market situation and available market situation and available resources.
„The excellent cooperation with BLK is not only evident in the not only in the general planning of the expansion project, but in particular the integration of the existing infrastructure into the network to be expanded. Deutsche Glasfaser is already taking over existing infrastructure. Such solutions avoid unwanted overbuilding and are therefore sustainable“, says Benjamin Staudt, Manager Municipal Cooperations at Deutsche Glasfaser.
Gradual expansion in municipalities and neighbourhoods
With the construction of the backbones and the access network, the municipalities in the district have created the basis for the extended expansion of the fibre optic network. In addition, the municipalities receive lease income for the use of the existing infrastructure.
The cooperation agreements between the municipalities and Deutsche Glasfaser result in the following schedule for the construction work:
- 2023/2024: Dettenheim, Philippsburg, Ubstadt-Weiher, Graben-Neudorf, Hambrücken
- 2025: Karlsruhe suburbs (Bergwald, Hohenwettersbach, Palmbach, Stupferich), Kronau, Rheinstetten. Linkenheim-Hochstetten, Bad Schönborn, Ettlingen, Oberhausen-Rheinhausen
- 2026: Karlsdorf-Neuthard, Forst, Kraichtal
- 2026/2027: Gondelsheim, Östringen, Pfinztal, Walzbachtal, Weingarten, Bretten, Oberderdingen, Sulzfeld, Zaisenhausen
600 kilometres of future-proof network already laid
„After completion of the subsidised expansion, which has been funded by the federal and state governments with over 100 million euros, BLK will have expanded over 10,000 fibre optic connections in almost all towns and municipalities in the district of Karlsruhe, especially in difficult locations and entire industrial estates, connected schools and farms and implemented the backbone routes with 81 transfer points in the districts. This means that a total of over 600 km of fibre optic lines have already been laid for a future-proof network,“ says Ragnar Watteroth, Commercial Director of BLK.
