With the signing of the „Letters of Intent“ announced on 9 April, Thyssengas Gelsenwasser Energienetze GmbH is laying the foundations for H2 supply to some areas of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
Thyssengas will provide H2 transport to the regions with its pipeline network. As the local network operator, Gelsenwasser Energienetze will be responsible for distributing the hydrogen throughout the region. The following regions/locations will be covered by the co-operation partners:
- Münsterland region
- Lower Rhine region focussing on Isselburg/Kalkar, Uedem, Kevelaer, Sonsbeck, Geldern, Issum, Rheurdt and Kaarst/Xanten, Alpen, Voerde and Rheinberg
„We want to provide our industrial customers and the municipalities in which we already operate gas infrastructure with pipeline-based hydrogen in the future“, says Christian Creutzburg, Managing Director of Gelsenwasser Energienetze. „We are actively helping to shape the market ramp-up and it is important to take these concrete steps now so that companies and municipalities know what they can plan for when transforming processes and heat supply.“
Ensuring planning and investment security
Numerous grid interconnection points are planned in the Lower Rhine and Münsterland regions, with which a large number of energy-intensive companies are connected.
„The memorandum of understanding signed today makes it clear once again that our hydrogen infrastructure is becoming increasingly relevant. Together with Gelsenwasser Energienetze, we are taking a further step towards the hydrogen ramp-up. We are thinking beyond the H2 core network as phase 1, because with this partnership Thyssengas is once again demonstrating that the second phase of the market ramp-up with the transition to the integrated network development plan for gas and hydrogen is already a reality and that we have long been preparing the distribution of hydrogen to consumers“, says Dr. Arne Dammer, Head of Strategy and Innovation at Thyssengas. „This creates planning and investment security for a large number of industrial and SME customers in North Rhine-Westphalia, one of the most important industrial locations in Germany.“
