Hexagon Purus has received an order for hydrogen storage tanks worth around 3.8 million euros. The order came from HPS Home Power Solutions AG for the integration of green hydrogen in the building sector.
The Norwegian manufacturer's hydrogen storage systems are to be used in HPS's "picea" line, which is optimized for the building sector. Hexagon Purus plans to deliver them from the second quarter of 2024, the company said in a press release.
The idea behind the picea devices: In summer, the buildings are supplied with solar power via PV modules, with surplus solar power being converted into green hydrogen using an electrolyzer. The system stores this in high-pressure tanks so that it can be converted back into electricity in winter. The aim is to supply buildings with solar energy from their own roofs all year round. According to the manufacturer, storage and use are emission-free.
The hydrogen tanks are particularly suitable for use in the HPS system due to their flexibility and scalability, says Matthias Kötter, Managing Director of the Hexagon Purus site in Weeze. The company opened a new production hall for its type IV tanks made of carbon fiber-reinforced plastic here at the end of January.
Hydrogen storage in the building sector
The building sector is responsible for almost 40% of annual CO₂ emissions worldwide. Green hydrogen can make a contribution to decarbonization here in suitable applications.
HPS claims to be a global leader in this segment. The Berlin-based company develops hydrogen-based energy storage systems for homes, apartment buildings and commercial properties. The picea has already won several prizes, including the Handelsblatt Energy Award, the Berlin-Brandenburg Innovation Award and the Sustainability Challenge of the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB).
